The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) is nearing federal approval to oversee Safe Drinking Water Act permitting for all underground injection control (UIC) wells in the state, following a May 16 announcement by U.S. EPA.
After conducting a technical and legal review, EPA has made a preliminary determination that Arizona’s UIC program meets all requirements for approval. The agency is requesting public comments on its proposed decision within 45 days of its publication in the Federal Register. Arizona would become the fifth state to be granted primacy for Class VI wells, following West Virginia’s approval earlier this year.
